Biography

Benjamin Sparrow was baptised at Plympton Erle on 5 October 1747. He married Elizabeth Stidston on 22 June 1771 at Ringmore. John Hatch was a witness at the wedding and Benjamin was a witness at John Hatch’s wedding. Benjamin and Elizabeth had seven children, all baptised at All Hallows Church, Ringmore by Kingsbridge, between 1772 and 1795. Benjamin was a churchwarden at Ringmore in 1771 to 73 with William Stidston. Elizabeth died on 13 November 1805 aged 54 and was buried at Ringmore. [gravestone] She was the daughter of a farmer of some note, William Stidston, and was baptised at Modbury on 27 February 1750. Benjamin Sparrow of Kinmare (Ringmore?) gent in 1800. Benjamin Sparrow of Rinmore yeoman a widower married Elizabeth Cole of Mary Tavy widow by lic on 31 March 1809. [m.lic] Benjamin was living at Ivybridge in 1833, and died on 24 June 1833 aged 85 at Ringmore [gravestone] and at the time had leasehold premises in Ringmore and a fishery at Chartaborough (Challaborough?) and boats. He left £1600 to son Benjamin, £20 each to his grandson Henry Shapter and his children as they turned 21. £100 to William Shapter, Edward Shapter, £308 to Marianne Hill and to Elizabeth Shapter. To William Cornish (Crimp), son-in-law and to Joanna Cornish (Crimp) £1300, £162 each to William, Garland, John and James Cornish and to Charlotte Blackler, Elizabeth Blackler, Benjamin C and Pruthesia Wyatt. Challaborough is a bay between Ringmore and Bigbury. Here Higher Fisherie and Lower Fisherie are shown on a map dated 1825. . The cellar or storage huts where pilchards were salted and cured were built, above high tide, of local materials.
