Note: I based birthdate (before 1778) off information that her dau. Elizabeth Martin Gable (Martin-2114) had her first child (Levi Jolly Gable) in 1812. I have seen notes that Martin-2114 was married in 1811 and 1793. I speculate that she was married in 1811 and born c. 1793. Subtracting 15 years from 1793 that would place Mary Pheby Martin's birth before c. 1778. * Written by Gene Brooks genebrooks@yahoo.com, Nov 22, 2016.

Martha Phoebe Jane "Phebe" Spearman

Biography

David Martin died between 4 Jan 1842 (will ordered) and 7 Feb 1842 (will admitted to probate). He must have been born before 1799 since dau. Sally (b. 1817) is apparently of age as David mentions his sons as being under age. Therefore, Mary or Pheby Martin must have been born before 1799 as well since she birthed Sally.

1850 SC census Page 201 Western Anderson Co. 650/654 indicates Levy Gable, age 35 years, farmer; wife, Sarah, age 30; daughters, Mary, age 15, Lavina, age 13 and Ealenon, age 11; sons, David H., age 9, John M., age 5, James, age 3, and William, age 5 mos., all born SC; John Hatchen, age 25 farmer

1860 SC census Page 216 Ln 5 Anderson Co. taken 7/17/1860 indicates Levi Gable, age 48 years, farmer; wife Sarah, age 45; daughter, Heleaner, age 19; sons, David H., age 18, John M., age 14, James L., age 12, William, age 9 and Marcus, age 5; daughter, Ann, age 2 mos., all born SC.

1870 can't locate them

1880 SC census taken 6/15/1880 #124 indicates Sally Gable, age 45 (this should be age 65), farmer and widowed (she and Levi had legally separate and he was living in Hart Co., GA, she was not widowed); son, Marcus, age 23; his wife, Tabitha, age 24; his daughters, Julia, age 5, Lizzy, age 3 and Alma, age 1; Tabitha Whitman, age 15 granddaughter, all born SC. There are two others listed in this household as children of Sally (Sarah "Sally" A. Minerva Martin Gable), Henry Gable, age 18 and Alice, age 17 both born SC, these could not have been her children because 1) her son Henry had been killed in the civil war and 2) the last child born to her was Ann Gable Latham.

1880 GA census taken 6/2/1880 #1117 Shoal Creek vol 12 ed 52 sheet 15 ln 5 #136 indicates Levi Gables, age 68; wife, Sally, age 63 (she was still his wife but legally separate and living in Anderson, SC - see above); Lono, age 3 listed as grandson, all born SC (this was not his grandson but his son by Bessie Simpson and his name was Derrick Elonzo Gable).

Levi is said to be the only non-family member buried in the Byrum Family Cemetery and was buried there because he and Sam Byrum were friends. His was the longest grave there because he was said to be 7' tall.

Levi married Sarah F. Bridges on 08/03/1885 in Hart County, GA. At the time of his death his will states that his household goods were to be sold and his widow and one minor child would be given one year of support from this sale.

Elonzo Gable and Kate Gable Loftis were natural children of Levi Gable and Bessie Simpson. They were living with Levi at the time of his death and their older brother, James Lafayette Gable, of Iva, SC took them to live with him. Elonzo's wife told me and my dad, John Sanford Gable, (in 1990) that Elonzo would sit and cry because he didn't know what happened to his baby sister. He was ten when Levi died, and as a ten year old he remember his baby sister being auctioned off on the court house steps. What was really happening was the auctioning off of Levi's possessions to give his widow and minor child one year of support, as mentioned above.

He married (2) Mahala Elizabeth Francis Grimes October 22, 1852 in Anderson, SC, daughter of James Grimes and Nancy Culbertson. He first married Mahala Elizabeth Francis Grimes October 22, 1852 (information given by Martha Sullivan states that their marriage date was October 1, 1852). They were married by her father, Rev. James A. Grimes, at the brides home in Anderson, SC. He and Mahala had 9 children. Edmund was exempted from the Civil war because he made shoes for soldiers (tanner, etc.). He ran a grist mill near Greenville, SC for a while - farmer later. He was a merchant owning a small store and sold "white meat" (pork), cheese and crackers. Was a city clerk in SC. Bought land February 19, 1855 in St. Clair Co., AL which he sold on October 22, 1855. Sold all his land in St. Clair Co., AL December 20, 1869 and moved to Shelby Co., AL. His second marriage was to Sibinia T. Lyons on December 1893 of which no children were born. Sibinia had a daughter, Doris born 1891, which Edmund adopted as indicated by the 1900 census, she was listed as 9 years old - - dated August 1999

Since Edmund and Sarah Martin Gable (mother of Mary Gable Grimes) were brother and sister, and he married Mahala Grimes, this made him not only Mary Gable Grimes' uncle as well as her brother-in-law.
