Biography

This profile is part of the Sperry Name Study.

Fletcher was born about 1836. He is the son of Samuel Speary and Mary Pennington. Married Esther Ann Edgar.

Fletcher's family used the Sperry spelling. The 1860 Pa. census show his father Samuel age 50 residing with him even though Samuel is also shown as head of household for his own family.

Mt. Pleasant Township, Whiteside Co, Illinois in the 1880 census (spelled Sperry). Also listed is a grandaughter, Julia Thomas, aged 8, born in Iowa, father born in Illinois & mother born in Pennsylvania. This is the child of his step-daughter Bernice Hiddleson. Step son Monroe Hiddleson is listed under the surname Sperry

Note The Biographical Record of Whiteside County states that Rosetta, his wife, came to Illinois & settled in Mt. Pleasant Twp.,Whiteside County with Fletcher. Then it states that Fletcher died in 1867. However, this HAS to be a typographical error as he & Rosetta & the children are found in both the 1870 & the 1880 census. In fact, Fletcher & Rosetta were still in Pennsylvania in 1870 census & hadn't even moved to Illinois yet. Many references are found in the Sterling Stanfard Newspaper (Sterling, Illinois) regarding getting his estate settled (dated from june 8, 1898 - June 29 1900).
