Biography

Edward Speed was the son of Dr John Speed of Southampton and his second wife Philadelphia Knollys. He was baptised on 3 September 1694 at Holy Rood, Southampton, Hampshire.[1]

In April 1711, he was bound as an apprentice to Robert Alsop, a hatmaker in Thames St, London, for a term of seven years.[2][3] He was admitted to the freedom of the Haberdashers' Company of London in 1718.[4]

He worked as a haberdasher of 'small wares' in Bread Street, London, and from 1740 as clerk of the Borough Market in Southwark, Surrey.[5]

He married Anne Peake on 18 November 1718 at St Bartholomew the Great, London.[6] They had five children:[7]

  • Edward Speed, baptised 9 Aug 1720, St Mildred Bread Street, London.[8] He was buried on 22 December 1726 in St Saviour, Southwark, Surrey,[9]
  • Anne Speed, born January 1722.[1]
  • John Speed, born 5 December 1723.[1] He was buried on 2 January 1723/24 at St Saviour, Southwark, Surrey.[10]
  • Elizabeth Speed, born 17 August 1725[1] and baptised 31 August 1725 at St Olave, Bermondsey, Surrey,[11] She was buried on 11 March 1725/26 at St Olave, Bermondsey, Surrey.[12]
  • Philadelpha Speed, born 24 April 1727[1] and baptised on 18 May 1727 at St Saviour, Southwark, Surrey.[13] She was buried on 27 Aug 1727 at St Saviour.[14]

Edward Speed reportedly lived to 'a great age.'[1]
