Biography

Daniell Speed was a stationer and bookseller at St Paul's Churchyard in London, England.

He was the son of John Speed, merchant taylor,[1] and was born in about 1589.[2]

In 1603, Daniell Speede was apprenticed as a stationer to Matthew Lawe for a period of nine years.[3] He was admitted to the freedom of the Stationers’ Company of London in 1614.[4]

He operated a business as a stationer and bookseller in St Paul's Churchyard from 1616 to 1620. His books carried the imprint, "Printed by ... for Daniell Speed, and are to be sold at his shop in Pauls Church yard at the signe of the Blazing Starre."

His first publication was A clowd of witnesses, written by his brother John Speed, in 1616.[5]

In February 1617-8, he married Maudlyn Garrett, the daughter of Cornelius Garrett, tailor, of All Hallows Staining, London.[6] They possibly had a daughter Susan, baptised on 25 April 1619, at St Christopher le Stocks, London.[7]
