Biography

Solomon was born about 1749, probably in Cratley townland which his father held until about 1752.[1] He was the son of Robert Speer (the younger) of Stewartstown and Ann Ledlie of Carnan, parish of Arboe.[2]
Solomon's father, Robert, died when he was very young. By his last will and testament, Mr Speer directed legacies to Solomon and his mother, with complex rules for passage to other near relatives should Solomon die or marry[2]—for which, please refer to the entry under date, 1754-02-26, in the profile for Solomon's father, or to the link provided at the bottom of this profile.
1769-08-12: Belfast News-Letter – Advert for the leasehold in the townlands of Cratley, Soarn, Lislee, and Leck,—except two Farms formerly demised to John Speer (d.1768) and William Speer;—for a term of fourteen years; proposals to Solomon Speer of Stewartstown and James Ledlie of Coagh.[3]
On the 8th January 1770, Solomon married Miss Jane Wallace in St Nicholas's parish church in Liverpool.[4]
Solomon Speer died less than a month of having married. His body was buried in St Peter's churchyard, Liverpool, on the 6th February 1770.[5][6]

Research notes

  • The estimated year of birth is based on Solomon Speer having attained the age of twenty-one years when he married in 1770.[4]
  • The date of burial has been used as a proxy for the date of death.[5]
