Biography

Agnes Speer was born about 1756, probably in Soarn townland in the parish of Donaghenry and county of Tyrone. She was the sister of Thomas Speer (1751–1835) of Soarn,[1] and probably the daughter of John Speer and Agnes, also of Soarn.
She married Robert Winning in the year, 1787, within the Diocese of Armagh.[2]
Agnes' husband died at Broomhill, near Stewartstown, on the 27th November 1829, aged seventy-one years.[3]
Agnes was named, and mentioned as a widow of Robert Winning, in the last will and testament of her brother, Thomas Speer (1751–1835) of Soarn.[1]

Research notes

  • The estimated year of birth presumes that Agnes Speer was younger than her brother, Thomas, and that Thomas' will listed his siblings in birth order, while allowing for two-year intervals between birth years. It is an estimate, only. ~Kilpatrick-1128
  • The precise location of Broomhill has not been determined. There were, however, Winning households in the parish of Artrea, county Tyrone. References have been found in the Belfast News-Letter for Robert Winning of Dufflis and Knockanroe townlands in that parish.[4][5]
  • Estimated date of death:—The last reference found (to date) for Agnes Winning, née Speer, is the mention in her brother Thomas's last will and testament, dated 17th February 1830 and proved 12th March 1835.[1]
