Biography

He attended Tarkio College and Kansas City Medical College. General practice in Richmond, then staff of the State Asylum for the insane at Osawatomie, KS. division Surgeon for Missouri Pacific Railroad. His brother William Louis joined him after WW I. The partnership didn't work out and because of Newton and Clara's marital problems they moved to Kansas City, Mo. in 1922. His office was in Kansas City, KS in the Armourdale district. They were later divorced.

My dad says he was "a born physician. He was a keen diagnostician and conservative therapeutist. He liked people and his patients swore by him."

His hobby was raising horses. "He began his practice as a real horse-and-buggy doctor and never lost the touch of the old time family physician."

My dad's greatest sorrow about him was his hostility to Christianity.

Enter a personal reminiscence or story.
I remember my grandfather's clear blue eyes. I was always told my eyes were like his. I remember his picking me up and putting me on his knee. I also remember my dad (Frederic Speer MD) dressing a cut he had on his knee, which wouldn't heal well. That's about all I remember. He died when I was almost five. I do remember that I loved him.
