Biography

Robert Spence died in Davidson County, North Carolina between 24 Aug 1825, when he made his will, and September 1825, when his will was admitted for probate.[1]

The will read:

In the name of God amen. I Robert Spence being weak in body but sound in mind and memory but knowing that men has to die, and after recommending my soul to God that gave it and my body to the earth and after being buried in a Christianlike manner and all my just debts punctually paid, I constitute and appoint this to be my last will & Testament.

Item I have given to my Son Joseph Spence to the amount forty dollars, and to my son Willis Spence I give one bay colt at thirty dollars and ten dollars in something else. And it is further my will that all my sons be made equal with those when of age or marriage, that is my son Jeremiah Spence, Robert Spence, Daniel Spence, John Spence, Mark Spence, Thornton Spence and it further my will that my son Alston Spence have but fifty cents of my property, and it is further my will, and I give unto my beloved wife Lovey Spence all my property real and perishable during life or so long as she remains my lawfull widow to support and raise my small like children and to give them moderate learning and further it is my will that at the death or marriage of my wife, that all shall be sold and equally divided among my children after being made equal with Joseph Spence and Willis. That is Jeremiah Spence, Willis Spence, Robert Spence, John Spence, Daniel Spence, Mark Spence, Thornton Spence,

Item I appoint my trusty friend William Hannah to be my hld and seal executor of this my last will and testament in witness thereof I have hereunto set my hand and this 24th day of August 1825
