Hi Tim,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Michele, Thanks for sending a message re pre-1700 profiles.

I'm a retired computer science teacher and have spent many years writing and using a wide variety of computer applications. I found the pre-1700 profile certification instructions regarding "projects" completely opaque - that is, I had no clear idea what "projects" meant, and still don't. I'd never heard or read anything about WikiTree projects, and the "projects" pages linked to the certification procedure had no introductory explanations whatsoever. Whoever created the pre-1700 profile certification procedure needs to sit with a total newbie and see how incomprehensible the "project" component is.

Spencer-2238 and Spencer-12443 do not represent the same person because: Spencer-2238 has a daughter who is too close in age to be the daughter of Spencer-12443

Now that you have had a little time to try WikiTree, there are a few more features you may find useful.

Ideas on what to include in a profile can be found in Styles and Standards, including some tips on writing biographies.

If you need to describe an event, an heirloom or a location relevant to your research, you may like to learn about Free Space Profiles.

Lastly, sometimes you'll run into unresponsive profile managers. We have a process for resolving those unfortunate situations.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask via my profile page.

Welcome back Tim!!!

You are now a confirmed member of WikiTree! Thank you for volunteering. Make sure to add more TAGS to follow as you grow the family tree.

Wow!!! You're the 12,443rd Spencer profile on Wikitree! I bet your 'cousins' on Wikitree will benefit greatly once you add your insightful collaboration and sourced research.

Have fun and make sure to join in the Question of the Week: Have you stumbled upon any strange deaths of your ancestors? Bizarre? Peculiar? Unusual? and share your stories!

If you need additional help, our Mentors Project is a friendly group of volunteers who are glad to assist you with WikiTree-specific problems.

See you in the branches---

I signed up a to WikiTree last week I wanted to start entering my father and mother, and so on, but am unable to do so because I'm a 'guest' and not a 'volunteer.' To become a volunteer I've repeatedly followed the instructions to out the form with 'tag' and 'comments,', and click 'Enter tags and volunteer,' but nothing happens. I've tried everything and am becoming very discouraged. Can you help me? Thanks

Spencer-2238 and Spencer-12443 appear to represent the same person because: I have just signed up, given the ID Spencer-12443, and intend to start entering what I know about my ancestors.

Spencer-2238 doesn't appear to contain any information on which to check if this was an earlier registration that I have forgotten, so merging would make sense to prevent unnecessary duplication of resources. It's possible I signed up with WikiTree much earlier and neglected to use the system. I can't find any record of having signed up.

Welcome to WikiTree!

WikiTree is different because our goal is to have one profile per person, and that means we all work together as a BIG collaborative team!

You'll get an email from us that has helpful links to get you started on WikiTree, which is not like any other genealogy site out there.

When you confirm your email address, you’ll have an opportunity to volunteer and tell us about your genealogical interests.

What brings you to WikiTree? Do you have research you’d like to share? Are you interested in how your family fits into the big tree? ?Fill in the tags and comments on your profile to show what you're researching? and click the "Save Tag(s) and Volunteer" button, and one of our Greeters will be happy to confirm your membership, and you’ll be on your way!
