Hardin Edmund Spencer was born in Patrick County, Virginia to Marvel Spencer and Sarah "Sally" Adams. He married Nancy S. Reynolds in 1846.[1][2]They lived in Patrick County and had eight children together.
After the death of his father, Hardin purchased Marvel's land at auction on October 38, 1845.[3]
Hardin was killed in battle at Drewry's Bluff, outside of Richmond, Virginia, in 1864, during the Civil War.[4]Although he has a memorial stone in the Spencer Family Cemetery, his burial site remains unknown.
Hardin wrote his will "in camp" during the Civil War "if I never return to my family". He listed his wife Nancy and children Sarah E., Mary S., Thomas J., Emily R., Naomi E., Austin L., Rosannah J. and Hardin D. The will was presented in Patrick July Court, 1864, admitted to probate and ordered to be recorded.[5]
