Elijah A. Spencer was born April 20, 1837 in Lee County, Virginia. He was the son of John M. Spencer & Henrietta Harris.

Husband of Nancy Ellen Jones, Son of John and Henrietta Harris Spencer. Retired farmer. About 1841 Elijah's parents came from Franklin Co., Mo and the following year moved to Sullivan Co., Mo. He attended local schools, his first teacher was John Harris. In 1861 he joined the Union Army, serving in Co. A, 23rd Missouri Vol. He was discharged July 18, 1865. He was taken prisoner at the battle of Shilo, held at Corinith, Mississippi. Was paroled June 1, 1862 at Macon, Georgia. He participated in the seige of Atlanta and accompanied General Sherman on his march to the sea. After returning home he married Nancy Ellen Jones, born 1840, KY. They were parents to Melissa G., Nancy J and James R Spencer. Religion: Baptist. He was a Democrat.
