Biography

William was the son of Isaac Spencer. In Isaac's will, William is referred to as my loving Son William Spencer begotten of my Wife before Marrage.

Served in Maryland Militia in the 33rd Infantry Regiment from Kent County.

He was a Federalist.

He was in the House of Delegates, Kent County, 1794-1796 and 1815, as well as the State Senate, Eastern Shore, 1816-1820; and was even Senate President.

William Spencer died, unmarried, in March 1822. He left his estate to his brother Isaac, with provisions for his nieces and nephews to inherit at 21 years old.

William Spencer is known to have enslaved people. These people include:

  1. Joseph Trusty and wife
  2. George Trusty (son of Joseph) and wife Elizabeth
  3. Henry Highland Garnet and sister, children of George and Elizabeth.

Liz, Click on the link in the message above to see Garnet's biography (not yet complete). Henry H Garnet's was born into slavery at William's estate. His family escaped shortly after William's death.

Thought you might be interested to know that William Spencer has been identified as the slaveholder of Joseph Trusty, who was the grandfather of notable Henry Highland Garnet (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Garnet-161). William is mentioned in Henry Garnet's biography.
