Biography

George Tiley Spencer was a lawyer who was elected for several terms to the New York State Legislature then was elected Judge of Steuben County.

Birth

"George Tiley Spencer" was born 6 November 1814[1] to George Spencer and Julia Pratt.[2][3]

Education

A 19th century family genealogical history[4] says that he went to Amherst Academy and the Hopkins Grammar School before attending and graduating from Yale College in 1837. Student list of 1835[5]

Marriage and children

George T. Spencer married "Harriet E. Stacy" on 9 Nov. 1842 in CT.[6][7][8]

Their names (including each of their LNBs) are also recorded on the Ohio death certificate of their daughter Clarissa.[9]

According to a 19th century family genealogical history,[10] Harriet and George had 10 children including:

  1. Ellen Julia Spencer (1844 - 1849)
  2. Roxana Jane (1846 - 1846)
  3. George Stacy Spencer, b. about 1847[11][12][13]
  4. Harriet Augusta Spencer, b. about1849[14][15][16]
  5. Emma Roxanna Spencer, b. about 1851[17][18]
  6. John Spencer (1855 - 1857)
  7. Betsey Spencer, b. about 1859[19][20]
  8. Richard Spencer (1861 - 1862)
  9. Hugh Spencer (twin), b. about 1864[21], d. 14 Jan 1889[22]
  10. Clarissa Spencer (twin), b. about 1864[23]

Career

The above cited 19th century family genealogical history[24] includes the following biography. He was "...admitted to the bar in July 1841. In August of the same year he began the practice of law in Corning, N.Y where he has since resided.... He was elected to the State Legislature of New York of 1857.... He was a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1867. He was elected Judge of Steuben County for the term commencing in 1872, continuing in office until 1878. He continued in the active practice of his profession until 1896, retiring at the age of 80."

Residence (from the censuses of 1850 to 1900)

George's place of residence and the members of his household were captured by each of the censuses from 1850 to 1900:

1850 -- Corning[25]

1855 - Corning.[26] Note that George's brother Richard P. Spencer was staying with the family. Also that son John, born in 1855, would die in 1857.

1860 -- Corning[27]

1865 - Corning.[28] Note that twins Hugh and Clarriss were added to the household. Richard, who was born in 1861 and who died in 1862, was never enumerated by any census.

1870 - Corning.[29] Note that daughter Harriet A. Spencer, 21 years, has married (to Horace N. Pond) and moved away.

1875 - Corning.[30]Note that son George S. Spencer, age 28, has moved away (to Minnesota [31] where he would soon marry)

1880 - Corning[32] Note that the twins Hugh and Clarissa have survived. Who are "son" George T. Spencer, age 10, and "grandson" George T. Spencer, age 3? Could both of these have been grandsons or was this a mistake of enumeration (with "son" George T. Spencer, age 10, not existing)?

1892 - Corning[33]

1900 - Corning[34]

Interest in Spencer family genealogy

His biography also notes that "He has been engaged, with his brother, R.P. Spencer, of Deep River, Conn. for many years in the collection of matters relating to the history and genealogy of the Spencer family."

Death

George Tiley Spencer died 3 March 1908 in Corning, Steuben County, N.Y.[35][36]
