A 19th century family genealogical history[4] says that he went to Amherst Academy and the Hopkins Grammar School before attending and graduating from Yale College in 1837. Student list of 1835[5]
Marriage and children
George T. Spencer married "Harriet E. Stacy" on 9 Nov. 1842 in CT.[6][7][8]
Their names (including each of their LNBs) are also recorded on the Ohio death certificate of their daughter Clarissa.[9]
According to a 19th century family genealogical history,[10] Harriet and George had 10 children including:
The above cited 19th century family genealogical history[24] includes the following biography. He was "...admitted to the bar in July 1841. In August of the same year he began the practice of law in Corning, N.Y where he has since resided.... He was elected to the State Legislature of New York of 1857.... He was a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1867. He was elected Judge of Steuben County for the term commencing in 1872, continuing in office until 1878. He continued in the active practice of his profession until 1896, retiring at the age of 80."
Residence (from the censuses of 1850 to 1900)
George's place of residence and the members of his household were captured by each of the censuses from 1850 to 1900:
1865 - Corning.[28] Note that twins Hugh and Clarriss were added to the household. Richard, who was born in 1861 and who died in 1862, was never enumerated by any census.
1870 - Corning.[29] Note that daughter Harriet A. Spencer, 21 years, has married (to Horace N. Pond) and moved away.
1875 - Corning.[30]Note that son George S. Spencer, age 28, has moved away (to Minnesota [31] where he would soon marry)
1880 - Corning[32] Note that the twins Hugh and Clarissa have survived. Who are "son" George T. Spencer, age 10, and "grandson" George T. Spencer, age 3? Could both of these have been grandsons or was this a mistake of enumeration (with "son" George T. Spencer, age 10, not existing)?
His biography also notes that "He has been engaged, with his brother, R.P. Spencer, of Deep River, Conn. for many years in the collection of matters relating to the history and genealogy of the Spencer family."
