A VIEW
Leaving the patriots with his father, Hazelton, a capable man of stature appeared ready to achieve great things. For some years he had. Had married a young wife (about age 16), had children, and was master of a huge estate of over 5,000 acres in Canada. Through his efforts he worked his way up through military and political offices to becoming the Lt. of the county of Lennox.
Not gifted with a frequent Spencer long life, Hazelton died at age 55. On February 7, 1813 at Kingston, Frontenac County, Ontario, he fell "from an illness brought on by over-exertion in discharge of his duties." His wife Margaret followed not long afterward and died at age 44, in about 1815 at Kingston, Frontenac County, Ontario.
Hazelton's many children lived on, and he passed a significant estate to his inheritor. Aside from his many personal contributions to Canadian military and governance, perhaps the greatest success Hazelton had was creating a large family to support the development of rugged Canada.
DETAILS
Hazelton Spencer was born on August 29, 1757 at West Greenwich, Kent County, Rhode Island. Hazelton is the son of Benjamin Spencer and Mercy Potter.
Hazelton marries to Margaret Richards in about 1787 in Kingston, Frontenac, Ontario. Margaret was born in about 1771 at Fort Hunter, Mohawk Valley, New York, the daughter of John Jean Richard and Elsa Alice Conner.
Children of Hazelton Spencer and Margaret Richardson are:
1. Benjamin Conger Spencer was born on April 5, 1789 in Fredericksburgh Township, Lennox and Addington County, Ontario.
2. John Hazelton Spencer was born on October 2, 1791 in Fredericksburgh Township, Ontario. John was a Physician.
3. Richard Spencer was born in 1796 in Fredericksburgh Township, Ontario.
4. William Taylor Spencer was born in 1797 in Fredericksburgh Township, Ontario.
5. Margaret Spencer was born in 1800 in Fredericksburgh Township, Ontario.

10. Cecilia Spencer was born on September 29, 1811 in Fredericksburgh Township, Ontario.
In 1784, Hazelton Spencer came to this country, in company with a large number of his former comrades, and took up land and settled in "Third Town", or Fredericksburgh, on the shores of Bay of Quinte, west of what is known as Conway, and about on the farm now owned by Mr. Henry Vandyck. There the most of his after days were spent, and there he died and was buried, beside his wife and some of their children. In about 1787 he married Miss Margaret Richards, by whom he had a large family. The baptismal records of a number of their children appear in the register of the Rev. John Langhorn, now published in the papers of the Ontario Historical Society, Vol. 1, and also in the parish records of Kingston. The record of his burial in 1813 also appears in the Langhorn record.
The sons were Benjamin, John, Hazelton, Richard and Augustus, the daughters, Margaret, Julia, Anna, Cecilla. They were nearly all born in Fredericksburgh and some of them spent all their days there. Benjamin, the eldest, inherited the estate, as the father died suddenly and intestate. John was a physician; he practiced and died at Carleton Place. He was father of Rev. Canon Spencer. James went to Massachusetts, where he died. William resided in Fredericksburgh, and was the father of Mrs. B.C. Lloyd, of Camden, and the late Hazelton Spencer, who lived for years in this county and died at Trenton a couple of years ago. Of the daughters, Margaret married a Mr. Conger, Cecelia, a Mr. Werdon. Julia married Mr. John Sloan, a well known resident of South Fredericksburgh years ago. She was the mother of Mrs. Richard Phippin and Thomas Sloan, now both well known residents near Conway. Of the other many descendants we have no record at our disposal. from The Napanee Beaver Newspaper, March 8, 1901.
