Biography

This profile is part of the Spencer Name Study.

William Spencer married Mary Unknown, before 1756 in Virginia

He and his wife had three children:[1]

  1. Frances,[1] b. c. 1756
  2. Dolly. m. French,[1] b. 1758 in Bedford Co., VA
  3. William,[1] b. 1761 in Prince Edward Co., VA

In Sept 1794, William's will was probated. He left his estate to his wife and and three children.[1]

Research Notes

From the probate, one can see that the daughter was married. The minimum age for a bride in most lands was 12. Assuming that this daughter was the youngest and giving a year apart for the two prior children would put the dauhgter's birth prior to 1794, the second son before 1793, and the first son before 1792. The marriage of William would then have been before 1791 and his minimum age at the time 14 placing his birth before 1777.
There was a grant by a WIlliam Spencer and wife Sarah to James Canter on 4 Apr 1791. If this is the same William as this profile, it would mean that his wife's name was Sarah not Mary but one cannot be certain.[2]
There was a grant by Levi Spencer to William Spencer on 2 Aug 1794, which date is shortly before the probate of the William Spencer who is the subject of this profile.[3]
Original versions of this merged profile gave the following info, if sources can be ascertained:
  1. "He was born about 1729 in Henrico Co, Virginia.
  2. Probably either a son or identical to WIlliam or Nicholas and Mary Spencer of Henrico Co VA."
  3. Wife's maiden name is given as Newbill on FamilySearch - is there any truth to this? The profiles in question are and were conflated messes with little to no sourcing, and as such should be taken with a grain of salt.
  4. There is a child Levi who is given to this couple on Wikitree - is there any truth to this as well?
  5. Another part of this profile listed dates as about 1730 and about 1782. Could this indicate a bad merge due to his probate date of September 1794 (12 years later)?

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

Early Spencers of Virginia, compiled by Henry Rigby, does list Levi as younger brother of William, Dolly and Frances. See page 138.

Spencer-16900 and Spencer-536 appear to represent the same person because: Similar birth/death information and same children mentioned in bio.
Spencer-16900 and Spencer-536 do not represent the same person they are from different counties and have nothing in common save first and last name.

Spencer-532 and Spencer-536 do not represent the same person because: father son
We have 3 William Spencer's that need to be merged Spencer-536 and Spencer-532 Spencer-12911
What evidence do you have that the William Spencer (Spencer-12911) who owned 140 acres in Patrick County that was first taxed to his estate, rather than the man himself, in 1799 was the same William Spencer (Spencer-536 and Spencer-532) who last appeared in the Montgomery County personal property tax lists a decade prior? The William in Montgomery wrote his will on 02 Feb 1789, then was apparently dead by the time taxes were collected from a Mary Spencer on 08 March 1789. Mary was charged for one son between the ages of 16-20 and six horses. The following year, Mary is not named in the tax lists, but William's son Levi appears for the first time, charged for six horses on 16 Dec 1790. The 140 acres in Patrick County is apparently still being charged to a living man named William Spencer for a full decade after the man by the same name died in an adjacent county, so we need some proof...

Spencer-12539 and Spencer-536 appear to represent the same person because: They were both born very close to one another by date and geographically, and the children appear very similar (Levi and William).

Hi, David, can I get some clarification on this? William Sr's will does not list a child named Levi. I just cleaned up his profile as it has been 3 years without a post-merge cleanup, but I would really appreciate some insight into why you believe Levi would not be listed in William Sr's will and why these two Williams were one and the same.

It is very difficult to read the blurry image of the actual will, which appears to have been taken from the same "faulty" film at both Ancestry and Familysearch, but it does appear to mention a son named Levi twice:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-99P6-54QC?i=532&cat=373892

He "loans" his (unnamed) wife the land and premises on which she lives until her death, then "to my son Levi Spencer to have and to hold the said land..." Then he mentions land for his son William, which is contingent upon paying a balance to John Payton, or "if not I give the land to my son Levi ordering that he pay up the s'd balance..."
