Pvt. James Spencer served in the United States Civil War. Enlisted: Sept. 27, 1861 Mustered out: 6 Feb. 1864 (according to him), 16 Feb. 1864, Deserted (failed to return from veteran's furlough, according to regimental roster) Side: USA Regiment(s): 10th Regiment, Michigan Infantry, Company B
James Spencer was born on December 20, 1826 in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. James Spencer is the son of Daniel Spencer and Mary Perkins. James was a Farmer.
James Spencer fought in the Mexican War and the U.S. Civil War. In the Civil War, James was enlisted in the 10th Regiment, Michigan Infantry, Company B on Sept. 27, 1861. He may have deserted 16 Feb. 1864, when he failed to return from veteran's furlough after reenlisting 6 Feb. 1864, according to the regimental roster, but he states he was mustered out 6 Feb. 1864 and he filled for a pension and as far as I can tell it was granted (Was his "reenlistment" a clerical error? Also, why would a deserter file for a pension?). This Regiment lost during service, 7 Officers and 95 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 2 Officers and 223 Enlisted men by disease. Total of 327 lives lost.
James marries first to Marcia Clark on December 13, 1853 at Tuscola, Michigan. They Divorced. They have two children: Daniel M. Spencer and Elijah Spencer.
He marries second, his brother Mose's widow, Jane E. Randall on December 27, 1871 at Tuscola, Michigan. Jane Randall is admitted to an Asylum at Pontiac, Michigan on January 7, 1895.
James Spencer was hit by a train in Denmark Township and subsequently dies on June 6, 1896 at Denmark Junction, Tuscola County, Michigan, United States.
