Biography

Ezra Spencer served in the United States Civil War.
Side: USA
Ezra enlisted during Civil War at age 17 at Rhinebeck Dutchess County NY on 1 Sept 1862 and mustered into Musician Co F 150 Regt Inf 11 Oct 1862. He was promoted to Full Private on 15 Apr 1864. While in GA he contracted Rheumatism. Ezra stood 5'-5" tall and had light hair color. He mustered out on 08 Jun 1865 at Washington DC and was discharged at Poughkeepsie NY 18 June 1865 at the close of war. In 1870 he lived in Saugerties NY with the Snyder family and worked as a boatman. In 1873 he worked as a carpenter in Kingston NY. While visiting a Veteran's facility in Detroit Mich in 1880, he contracted Acute Orchitis and was placed in the Disabled Veteran's Home in Bath NY in October 1880. At that time he was incorrectly listed as a Widower. He was at the Bath facility between 1880-1885 and again in 1887, 1895 and 1919. He was also housed at Leavenworth KS Disabled Volunteer Solder's Home 1886 and between 1888 and 1890. he was housed at Hampton VA Disabled Volunteer Solder's Home 1891-1894. In 1900 he was living with his sister Abbie M. (Spencer) Dubois in Saugerties NY. He died at Bath NY facility.

Ezra is buried at the former St. Luke's Cemetery in Clermont, now owned by the Town of Clermont. Also buried there is his sister Sarah M. (Spencer) Thomas, Sarah's son Charles D. Thomas, and another of his sisters Melinda D. (Spencer) Hunt, Melinda's husband Ambrose and two of their four sons.
