Biography

Thomas was born in 1785. He passed away in 1870.

4th Sergeant Thomas Draper Spicer is listed as an officer in Capt. Elisha Camp's 6th Artillery Company of BGen. Jacob Brown's New York State Militia. He and this unit were engaged in the successful First Battle of Sackets Harbor, 19 Jul 1812. He enlisted early in the War of 1812, and was a sergeant at the Battle of Sackets Harbor, and the sergeant who caught the spent ball fired from the English fleet, exclaiming as he did so, "I have caught out King George"; from which may be inferred that baseball was not an unknown game to the early settlers of New York State (via the Spicer Family Genealogy 1911 [1]). His signature can be seen with other unit members on this site [2]. Thomas' brothers Private Eli Spicerm Private Daniel Spicer, and Private George Spicer appear to be part of this same company.
