Biography

Augustus was born in 1846. He was the son of James Spicer and Mary Price. He passed away in 1885.

Sometimes used the name John e.g. on some of the census returns.

Was living with his brothers at the time of the 1871 Census- butcher

On the marriage certificate he was a Paper Manaufacturer, on son John Henry's birth certificate he is a gardener (domestic servant) in Northwood, although the birth is registered in Hastings. On son Arthur George's it says he was a butcher but now deceased.

Oral history is that Augustus John was the black sheep of the family. He got a share of the sale of Glory Mill, spent it enjoying himself, finally settled down and married, only to have 4 children in 5 years, dropping dead before Arthur George was born, leaving the family penniless. At which point Rosa moved them back to Sussex where she had the support of her family.
