James was born in 1844 in Tolpuddle, Dorset to George and Elizabeth.
In 1861 he was working as a bricklayers boy in his home village, and he spent the rest of his working life in the trade as a builder and plasterer.
He married Rebecca Burt in 1870, most probably at Winfrith Newburgh, where they would live and raise a family. They had six girls, including twins in 1876 (Alice and Ellen) who tragically both died before they reached the age of 2.
