Biography

Charlotte Spicer was born in 1847 in Brailes, Warwickshire, England to George Spicer and Anne (Dodd) Spicer. Her birth was registered in Shipston on Stour, Warwickshire in the second quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Dodd.^[1] She was christened in Brailes on 8 Aug 1847.^[2]

In 1851 Charlotte Spicer (age 3) lived in Brailes with her father George (36, Ag Lab), mother Ann (36), and five siblings: William (14, Plough Boy), Thomas (13, Plough Boy), Ann (11), Betsy (6), and John (1).^[3]

In 1861 Charlotte Spin [Spicer] (age 14, Housemaid) lived at Cross on the Hill in Old Stratford, Warwickshire as a servant in the household of Mary Newnham.^[4]

Charlotte had a son out of wedlock: William George Spicer (1869-1876).^[5]

In 1871 Charlotte Spicer (age 23, Cook) lived in Tachbrook, Warwickshire as a servant in the household of John Garner.^[6] Her son George W (2) lived in Brailes with her parents [Charlotte's sister Mary also had a son named William George who was living with their parents, so it seems Charlotte's son went by George as he was younger].

Charlotte Spicer married Henry Joshua Clarke in 1878. The marriage was registered in Warwick, Warwickshire in the third quarter of the year.^[7]

Charlotte and Joshua had four children: Mary Ann Spicer Clarke (1879-), John Andrew Clarke (1880-1881), Lucy Elizabeth (Clarke) Chater (1882-1964), Joshua William Clarke (1885-1971).

In 1881 Charlotte Clarke (age 33) lived at Bannister Ct Kenilworth St in Leamington Priors, Warwickshire with her husband John [Joshua] (33, Paper Hanger) and two children: Annie (2) and Andrew (0).^[8]

Charlotte's husband passed away in 1887.

In 1891 Charlotte Clarke (age 43, Charwoman) lived at Charles Street in Leamington Priors with her daughter Mary A (11, Scholar) and son Joshua W (5, Scholar).^[9] Her daughter Lucy (8, Scholar) was living in Northamptonshire with her Clarke grandparents.

In 1901 Charlotte Clarke (age 53, House Charwoman) lived at Court Street in Leamington Priors with her son Joshua W (15, Cabinet Mafurs Apprentic).^[10]

In 1911 Charlotte Clarke (age 63, Charwoman) lived in Leamington with her son Joshua William (25, Cabinet Maker).^[11]

Charlotte Clarke passed away in 1931, aged 84 years. Her death was registered in Southam, Warwickshire in the second quarter of the year.^[12]
