Biography

When John Russell Spiers was born on July 31, 1849, in Ontario, his father, John, was 45 and his mother, Jannet Spottiswood , was 42. John was a veterinarian.^[1]

He married Frances Elizabeth Calder on September 15, 1879 in Ontario and then moved to Manitoba. His wife died in childbirth in early 1881 and John is shown in the subsequent census as a widower with a two month old baby.^[1]

He married Eliza Blair on December 18, 1883, in Brandon, Manitoba.^[2] They had five children in 13 years. He died on January 28, 1900, in Virden, Manitoba, at the age of 50.^[3]
