Biography

Descendant of John Ganzer Spires and Col John Pitts.

Lucy was born in 1895, the 6th of 10 children to James C Spires and Rebecca Jane Pitts. ^[1] Her siblings were: Emma Jane, Mary DeLina, Ida Missouri, Catherine, Joel Ross, Marion J, Neal, Warren J, Alexander, and Alice; his 9 half-siblings were: Elizabeth, John L Sr, James Redden Sr, Isaac S, Andrew Jackson, Charles L, Walter Reece, Lewis John, and William Marion.

13 Jun 1900: Milan District #1344, Telfair County, Georgia. Lucy was 3 years old, living with her father, James Spiers, and her mother, Rebecca Spiers, along with six of her siblings.^[2]

13 May 1910: Cobbville District No. 1284, G.M., Telfair County, Georgia. She was about 12 years old living with her mother, Rebecca Spires and 5 of her siblings. Her father, James, had passed way in 1907. Her future husband, Arthur, was living next door with her brother, William Marion Spires, and his wife, Alicee, who was Arthur's sister.^[3]

17 Dec 1911: When she was 16, she married Arthur Jackson Towns, son of Elisha Edward TOWNS and Mary Jane WALKER, in Milan, Telfair County, Georgia. (Witnesses: Mat Walker and Joel Spires. Clergyman: "Unknown") ^[4]

21 Jan 1920: Milan District 1344, Telfair County, Georgia. At about the age of 21, she was living in the home with her husband, A.J. Towns, and 3 of her children. It appears that her father-in-law, Elisha Towns, and her sister-in-law, "Cattie" Towns was living with them or next door. A.E. Towns is identified as "father" and "Cattie" as sister, with Arthur as head of household. Living nearby was her half-brother, Charley, with his wife, Ada, and eight of their children.^[5]

16 Apr 1930: Milan District 1344, Telfair County, Georgia. Lucy, age 33, is living with her husband, Arthur, and 3 of their children. ^[6]

1935 to 16 Jan 1940: M.D. 1707, Sunshine, Telfiar County, Georgia. She was about 42 years old, her husband, Arthur, was about 50 years old. 7 of their 11 children are still living at home. Also living in the household is her widowed sister-in-law,Sally Garrison. ^[7]

She remarried after 1954 (a specific date is not known) in her late 50's-early 60's to Harris Newton CLARK Sr from Brunswick, Georgia. He passed away in 1968 and after that, she lived in nursing homes in both Warner Robins and Milledgeville, and in government housing in Milledgeville.

She died on 7 Jun 1982 in Milledgeville, Baldwin, Georgia and was buried in the Midway United Methodist Church Cemetery in Milan, Telfair County, Georgia, next to her husband. ^{[8] [9] [10]}

She was a housewife and lived in Telfair County, Georgia until her husband, Arthur, passed away in 1950. At which time she began living with some of her married children, mostly in Baldwin County, Georgia, until her youngest daughters were married and had families of their own. Very little is known about the time she was married to Mr. Clark.

It's possible she never held a job, she didn't talk much and she didn't write much.

1. Annie Mae TOWNS was born on 11 Jun 1913 in Milan, Telfair County, Georgia. She died on 21 Sep 2006 in Brunswick, Glynn County, Georgia.

2. Vettie Odet TOWNS was born on 17 Aug 1915 in Milan, Telfair County, Georgia. She died on 09 Jul 2003 in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia.

3. James Arthur TOWNS was born on 29 Jun 1918 in McRae, Telfair County, Georgia. He died on 06 Dec 1977 in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia.

4. Pauline TOWNS was born on 26 Oct 1920 in Milan, Telfair County, Georgia. She died on 11 Aug 2014 in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia (Coliseum Medical Center).

5. Bessie Lee TOWNS was born on 25 Oct 1923 in Milan, Telfair County, Georgia. She died on 01 Jun 1995 in Milledgeville, Baldwin County, Georgia.

6. Lorene TOWNS was born on 11 Apr 1926 in Milan, Telfair County, Georgia. She died on 21 May 2012 in Milledgeville, Baldwin County, Georgia. ^[11][12]

7. Payton Lamar TOWNS Sr was born on 16 Mar 1929 in McRae, Telfair County, Georgia. He died on 06 May 2007 in Milledgeville, Baldwin County, Georgia.

8. Lucile TOWNS was born on 14 Feb 1932 in McRae, Telfair County, Georgia. She died on 16 Mar 2006 in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia.^[13]

9. Fannie Louise TOWNS was born in 1934 in Telfair County, Georgia. She died on 24 Jun 2019 in Jackson, Mississippi.

10. Ruby Myrtice TOWNS was born in 2 Aug 1937 in Telfair County, Georgia. She died on 25 Dec 2016 in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia.

11. DAUGHTER was born in 1940 in Telfair County, Georgia.
