Lester was born in 1917, the 7th of 11 children to William Marion Spires and Alice Jane Towns. His siblings were: Fred Eugene, Infant Boy, James Otis, Eula Mae, Norman Jackson, Willie Maud, Myrtle Jeanette, Doris, Ruth Pearl, and Lucille.
He married in 1933 to Margie Elizabell Scarborough, daughter of James Mitchell Scarborough and Essie Mae Sikes. He was about 16 years old. They had at least 6 children together:
