Biography
Birth and Parentage
William was born in Linlithgowshire, West Lothian, Scotland on 21 January 1792,[1] the son of William Spottiswoode and Janet Mitchell. He was baptised in Kirkliston, Linlithgowshire, on 25 February.[2]

Life and Career
He was a businessman in Singapore for many years, [4][5]
He accompanied his friends Alexander Guthrie[8] and Alexander Laurie Johnston, also Singapore merchants, from Singapore to England in 1841-1842. They sailed with the Charles Grant to Bombay in December 1841, took the steamer Berenice from Bombay to Suez, [9]and sailed from Alexandria on the steamer Oriental via Malta to Falmouth, Cornwall. [10]
Death
He passed away on 7 November 1858[11] at his home, 40, Fitzroy Square, London [12] and his will was proved at the Principal Registry in England on 21 June 1859. [13]
