James Phillip Spradley was born on 19 Dec 1933 in Baker Oregon to parents Francis Spradley and Nanette Settles as their fifth child. He graduated from Franklin High School in Los Angeles, California. He married Barbara Ann Walton on 24 Aug 1956 in Eagle Rock, California. Together they had three daughters. He died on 21 Sep 1982 in Hennepin, Minnesota at age 48 of leukemia.
He wrote and edited 20 books as an anthropology researcher and professor after earning his Ph.D. at the University of Washington. He taught at the University of Washington Medical School and Macalester College in Minnesota. He developed new methods in ethnography.
