Biography

Darius Sprague was born 1789 to Jonathan Sprague & Phebe Lounsbury in Winhall, Vermont.

In about 1808, Darius married Celia Danly in Bennington, Vermont. They had six children. Celia passed away in 1849.

In 1851, Darius married Thankful McGregory. They did not have any children.

In 1868, Darius died in Holley, New York.

"'THE TOWN OF MURRAY.

[page 208] Darius Sprague came on foot from Vermont to Murray in the summer of 1810, and located by article 400 acres of land lying about two miles northwest of Holley. After making a small clearing on lot #98 he returned to Vermont. In the spring of 1811 he came back to continue his improvements and build a log house; but before the tenement was completed he accidentally cut himself with an axe, which caused him to again return to his home in Vermont, where he remained until the spring of 1812, when he and his father's family moved on to his new farm in Murray, which he continued to reside until his death in March 1868. Previous to canal navigation, Mr Sprague had walked the entire distance between his old home in Vermont and this place seven times, a journey of over four hundred miles.

[page 306] Danley D Sprague was born in Murray in 1820 where he now resides. He was married in 1845 to Eunice daughter of Joseph and Rebecca Bevins of Murray and has four children. He was elected sheriff of Orleans county in 1859 and served three years and has been supervisor five years. He is the only surviving son of Darius and Celia Sprague who had six children.
