Joseph Sprague was born 15 Jan 1739 in Smithfield, Providence, Rhode Island.[1]

The same source says that Joseph served in May 1778 as Captain of the 3d Company of Smithfield Militia (R.I. Col. Research Notes

  • Last name: Sprague. This interesting and unusual surname is of Old Scandinavian origin, and is a patronymic form of the surname derived from the Old Norse byname "Sparkr", meaning sprightly, vivacious. The name Sparkes or Sprakes contains the patronymic suffix "-s", meaning son of; hence, "son of Sparkr".
