Biography

Surname: Spratlin(g) with a "T".

All of my verified family lines are US Southern Colonists. My wife's verified family lines are all Yankees. Oh my!

My earliest known US Southern Colonist immigrant ancestor arrived in Jamestowne in August 1611—Sisley (unknown) (Jordan) Farrar, my 10th great-grandmother, is my Jamestowne Society Qualifying Ancestor. Sisley lived at Jordan's Journey, a complex of 20 buildings housing 55 people. Items found during archaeological research of the site are on display at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture.

Recent Family Tree Finds

While searching for Spratlin(g) sources, I bumped into William Philip Spratling (1900–1967), my 3rd cousin 3rd removed. William was one of the most distinguished silversmiths of the 20th century. He and William Faulkner were roommates in New Orleans. His biography[1] is the most interesting book I've read in a long time.

Current Research Focus

The James Spratling (1750–1812) brick wall.

Currently compiling and properly sourcing all records for Spratling Name Study in Virginia pre-1800. Many removed to NC, SC, and GA, and then west. Name variants include: Spracklin, Spradley, Spradlin(g), Spratlin(g), and a few more. See Sourced-Spratlin(g).

Y-DNA results from the Spradlin project make it clear the US Southern Colonists Spradlin(g)s and Spratlin(g)s are not related within both the genealogical and historical timeframes. So despite what 100s of family trees say, James Spratlin (1750–1812) is not a descendant of Andrew Spradling (1652–1733).
