Biography

Colonel Thomas Sprigg was born around 1668, in the British North American Colony of Maryland. Thomas is shown as the son of Catherine Sprigg in John Frederick Dorman's, Adventurers of Purse and Person, Virginia 1607-1624/5 (1987), pp.190-192. His date of birth is uncertain but was probably about 1660. It is most likely that his mother died around the time of his birth and that he was brought up by his stepmother, Eleanor Nuthall.

Thomas Sprigg served in the Calvert County Militia and is referred to as both a Major and Lieutenant Colonel.

Thomas became a member of the Lower House of the Maryland General Assembly and was a Justice in Prince George's County.

Thomas married Margaret Mariarte (b.1672/74, Anne Arundel Co., MD) on 27 Nov 1739, in Prince George's Co. MD. She was the daughter of Edward Mariarte (b. c.1640, County Killarney, Ireland - ?) and Honor O'Brien (or Osborn) (b. c.1645, Ireland - 1701, Maryland).

The Register of Queen Anne's Parish, Prince George's Co MD, names their children:-
  1. Thomas Sprigg (V) (ca 1692, Prince George's Co MD- 1725) [M] m. Margery Beall;
  2. Edward Sprigg (ca 1694, Prince George's Co MD- 31 November 1751, Prince George's Co MD) [M] m1. Mary Belt, m2. Elizabeth Pile;
  3. Priscilla Sprigg (ca 1697, Prince George's Co MD- ca 1733) [F] m1. Ralph Crabbe in 1716, m2 Ralph Wright;
  4. possibly Margaret Sprigg (ca 1698, Prince George's Co MD- 1755, Maryland) [F] m. Francis King on 26 September 1717 in Maryland.
  5. Elizabeth Sprigg [M] Josiah Wilson, Jr. (Josiah Wilson, Jr., wedded Elizabeth Sprigg, daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Sprigg and his wife, Margaret (Mariartee), all of Calvert and Prince George's counties, Maryland).[1]

Thomas died in 1730. [2]

In "Adventurers of Purse and Person" there is information on this family. I am also a descendant of the Graves family, so I printed this sheet. This information is that "Thomas was born about 1665 .....and married Margaret, daughter of

Edward and Honor Marriott (Mariatee) of Anne Arundel Co., MD" Marriott is also an old Maryland name. Noland 588.
