Biography

Flag of Northamptonshire (adopted 2014)
William Sprigg was born in Northamptonshire, England.

William Sprigg is estimated to have been born around 1605. His father is believed to have been Thomas Sprigg, of Harrington, Northamptonshire, based on information in a marriage bond relating to his brother John, and John's 1690 will. A baptism from 1608, at nearby Marston Trussell, in Northamptonshire, has been postulated as possibly relating to William, however his was a common name, and further support would be required before accdepting it. There is also speculation that William may have been the father of Thomas Sprigg (b.1629), who made his way to the British North American colonies of Virginia and Maryland in the mid 1600s, and who is widely believed to have originated from around Kettering, in Northamptonshire, although documented links between these two men, and their relationship to Kettering, are lacking. [1][2]

Marriage [3]:

  1. Anne [unknown], b: 1610, in Kettering, Northamptonshire, Eng., married: c.1629 in Kettering, Northamptonshire, England.

Speculative Children [4]:

  1. Joane Sprigg, aka Reade, Tyler, Beall, (b: c.1646)
  2. Lt. Thomas Sprigg, (b: c.1629, in Kettering, Northamptonshire, England.)

William's brother John's will, from 1690, mentions a bequest to "Thomas Sprigg, son of my brother William Sprigg, should the the said Thomas Sprigg ever return into England and demand the same." Which supports, but doesn't prove, the possibility that William's son could have been the colonist who established himself successfully in America, at Maryland. [5][6]

Little is known about William, and concrete evidence is lacking, at this stage, to prove the speculation about his possible wife and children.
