Born September 12, 1852. Fotheringhay, Northamptonshire, England
James, son of Charles Spriggs & Rebecca, was baptised on 12 September 1852 in Fotheringhay, Northamptonshire, England.[1]
Immigration: 1870
Naturalization as a Citizen: 1881
Lived in a shared house, called Goodrich Farm, until 1888 (had lived there since 1881, est.). "After living on this farm for seven years, my father and mother decided to move again, evidentially dissatisfied with living in the house with another family all their lives and, deciding at last, that they would live in a place by themselves.".
We rented a farm, known as the Bailey Farm, owned by James A. Bailey and located on the road south from Lowell, about a mile and a half from the Village of Lowell. My father rented this farm for a two year period" - Ernest Memoir, p. 3.
My mother [Julia], who was very strong against drinking in any form, used to lecture him [James] continually and one of the things that he said to her once I always remembered: he said “Julia, if whisky ever gets to be a dollar a gallon, I am going to, for once in my life, have all of it I want.” -Ernest Spriggs Memoir, page 3.
