Biography

Overview

Henry Spring, son of Robert Spring and possibly, Joan Green,[1] was born about 1545, probably in Essex, England. He married Mary Finch in 1571 and had at least three children. He died in late March or early April 1595.

Early Life

Based on his marriage year of 1571, Henry Spring was likely born between 1540 and 1550. Henry had at least four siblings, Johanna, aka "Joan," Robert, Rebecca and Elizabeth. He likely grew up in Essex County, England near the village of Long Melford.

Marriage

Henry Spring married Mary Finch on July 8, 1571 in Great Yeldham, Essex, England.[2][3] [4]

Children

Together, Henry and Mary (Finch) Spring had at least three children:
The most comprehensive research on this family suggests the son, John, was the immigrant, John Spring, who migrated to Watertown, Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630.[4]

Home Life

At some point, Henry Spring moved to Tilbruy-Juxta-Clare, Essex, England, a village, seven miles (11 km) southwest of his childhood home in Long Melford and 1 mile (1.5 km) north of his place of marriage, Great Yeldham.

Land and Property

It is probable that Henry Spring did not acquire any property on his own prior to his death. He mentions none in his will, dated March 3, 1594/5. At the time of his will, Henry's father Robert was still living, so it is possible that Henry had not yet inherited property, if any, from his father.

Death and Burial

Henry Spring probably died in Tilbury-Juxta-Clare, England, sometime during the thirty-two days between March 3, 1594/5, the date of his will, and April 5, 1595, the date of its probate.[5] Henry was about forty-four years old at his death and left, in addition to his widow, three minor children.[6] Henry's father, Robert was still living at the time of Henry's death and is mentioned in Henry's will.[6] Henry was buried at Tilbury-Juxta-Clare, England on March 9, 1594.[4]

Estate

Roberts provides the following abstract of Henry Spring's will:
Soul to God, body o the churchyard at Tilbury. To poor of Tilbury 6s. All debts owing and moveable goods after payment of debs to be divided equally between my wife Mary and my two daughters Joan and Elizabeth. After my decease two honest men, one appointed by my wife Mary and one by my father Robert for inventory and pricing of my moveable goods and the equal parting. Mary my wife to be sole executrix and to see to the bringing up of my son John Spring honestly. Christopher Parkes, Robert Spring, Thomas Goldine, witnesses. Proved by executrix 4 April 1595.[7]
