Valentine McDaniel-McDonald (and Sarah) - Rev War pension record summary (W25.691 BL Wt 58688-160-55 - Penn.)

Brown Co. OH, 30 April 1833, Valentine McDaniel appeared before the judges of said county to petition for pension from the United States for his Rev War service, stating he was born 11 Jan 1760 at the South Branch of the Potomac River in Virginia (frontier settlement area, now Hampshire-Hardy Counties, WV) as told to him by his parents, that he moved with his parents while young to Baltimore Co. MD and thence to what was then Westmoreland Co. PA from where he served; that he later moved to Mason Co. KY and thence to Clermont Co. OH, later Brown County.
Valentine McD stated that he served under Capt. Zadoch Springer in protecting Prickett's Fort on the Monongala River during 1777 (at age 17); that in 1778 he was under the command of Capt. James Doherty and Lt. Thomas Kerr in helping to build Fort McIntosh, which was about 30 miles below Ft. Pitt on the north side of the Ohio River; from where they subsequently "marched through a roughf country to the Tuscarawus River, a branch of the Muskingdum River (now in Ohio) about Eighty miles distant, there they Built a fourt called fourt Laurence in the months of october and november." That Col. Gibson, with about 400 men, remained at Ft. Laurence, while he was part of the group that left for other duty about the first of December, 1778. That he served as part of McIntosh's Campaign, when Capt. Doherty's unit joined "the main Army Commanded by General Mcintosh," about 1,700 men in all. Col. Gibson commanded the Regiment from Virginia, and Col. Broadhead commanded the Pennsylvania troops.
Valentine McD stated he had no discharge papers as none was given him, but that Benjamin Sutton of Brown Co. OH, and Joshua Yory of Mason Co. KY could attest to his service. George Edwards and Thomas McConnell of Brown Co. OH testified in his behalf, G. W. King, Clerk for the Court. (Pension was approved.).
Note: McDaniel, McDonald, McDanold, McDonell, and others, were common spelling variants used by various clerics of the times. The surnames Sutton, Edwards, and McConnell were common to both Fayette Co. PA and Brown Co. OH. I have not traced individuals of Capt. Springer's unit, possibly a lead for someone -- I will appreciate any info concerning these men. Neil McDonald.[16][17]
