Biography

Susannah was born about 1686, most likely in Henrico County, Virginia where her father was living at that time. She was the daughter of Godfrey Spruill and Joanna Sharpe. Her father, Doctor Godfrey Spruill, was one of the earliest doctors, if not the first doctor, in Albemarle County, Carolina Province. He was born about 1650 in Scotland and died about 1719 in Chowan Precinct [now Tyrrell County, North Carolina]. He migrated to Virginia Colony sometime before 1684, and moved from Virginia to Albemarle County, Carolina Province [North Carolina] about 1694.

Susannah moved with her parents from Virginia to Albermarle County, Carolina Province about 1694. Records from the sale of land in Virginia, document her family's move to Albemarle County, Carolina Province. Her father acquired land in Chowan Precinct using eight headrights (himself, his wife Joanna, daughters Susannah, and Anna Margarita, sons Samuel and Godfrey, Jr., plus Nicholas Phelps and Sarah Walker. The Land Grant Office in Raleigh, North Carolina, has a record of Godfrey Spruill receiving a grant of 640 acres (2.6 km2) along the Scuppernong River in Chowan Precinct, Albemarle County, Carolina Province on the south side of the Albemarle Sound. [In 1729, this area would become Tyrrell County, North Carolina.]

July 2, 1694, "These may certify yt at a Crt. Holden for the precinct of Chowan ye. Second of July 1694: Godfrey Spruell proved these Eight rights as followeth: Godfrey Spruell Sen., Joana Spruell, Susanah Spruell, Ana Margeritta Spruell, Saml. Spruell, Godfrey Spruell Junr., Nicholas Phelps, Sarah Walker. Attest: Nathanl. Chevin Crk."[1]

Susannah married Cuthbert Spruill about 1709 in Scuppernong, Carolina Province.[2]

In his Will dated 5 Aug 1718, her father Godfrey Spruill made the following bequests to Susannah and her husband Cuthbert Phelps[3]:

I give and bequeath to my son-in-law CUTHBERT PHELPS and my daughter SUSANNAH his wife a certain tract of land of estimation three hundred acres more or less and is boundeth as followeth beginning at marked White ??? at the Back Creek's mouth and running up the swamp to a branch eastward to Rich Level Land and along the branch to a line of marked trees ??? ??? ??? and along that line of marked trees to River ??? and from there to the first station to him and his heirs for ever.
I give to my daughter SUSANNAH a gold ring of twenty shills price.

Susannah and Cuthbert reportedly had the following children:

  1. Edward Phelps (1706-1778) [Note: Birth date is not consistent with parents presumed date of marriage.]
  2. Elizabeth Phelps (1710-)
  3. Godfrey Phelps Sr (1712-1751)
  4. James Phelps (1717-1794)
  5. Joshua Phelps (1719)
  6. John Phelps (172-1794)

She passed away between 1739 and 1741. [4]
