Biography

Anna was born about 1682 and most likely in Henrico County, Virginia Colony where her father was living in the 1680s. Her parents were Godfrey Spruill and Joanna Sharpe. Anna's father moved his family from Henrico County, Virginia Colony to Albemarle County, Carolina Province about 1694. "Ana Margeritta" is listed as one of his headrights for acquisition of land in Chowan Precinct, Carolina Province.

July 2, 1694, "These may certify yt at a Crt. Holden for the precinct of Chowan ye. Second of July 1694: Godfrey Spruell proved these Eight rights as followeth: Godfrey Spruell Sen., Joana Spruell, Susanah Spruell, Ana Margeritta Spruell, Saml. Spruell, Godfrey Spruell Junr., Nicholas Phelps, Sarah Walker. Attest: Nathanl. Chevin Crk."[1]

Anna Margarita was sometimes referred to as "Anaritta", and, in some references, an apparent transcription error refers to her as "Henrietta". Anna married twice, first to John Stewart/Stuart/Stuard who died in 1702, and second to Samuel Boutwell, who died in 1710.

She married John Stewart at Chowan Precinct, Carolina Province, circa 1701. Godfrey gave to Henrietta [Anaritta] and John Stewart 300 acres on 1 May 1701-22 and another 300 acres on 26 May 1702.

Godfrey Spruell, and wife Joanna, to John Steward, and wife Henrietta [Anna Margarita], our daughter. 300 acres on Albemarle Sound; 1st May, 1701-2. Test, Thos. Abington, John Burkett.[2]
Dr. Godfrey Spruell, and wife Joana, to Jon Stuard, and wife Henrietta [Anna Margerita], daughter of said Spruell. 300 acres of land in Scuppernong; May 26, 1701-02.[3]

Her father Godfrey was an executor for her husband's estate:

Stuart, John, Chowan, wife and father-in-law Dr. Godfrey Spruell, Executors. Jan’y 5th, 1702-03. Test, Wm. Wilkins, Alex Gillagin.[4]

She married Samuel Boutwell sometime after 1703.

Samuel Boutwell and wife Anaritta, relict of John STUART, deceased, to our honored father, Godfrey Spruill. Tract of land containing 300 acres on Scuppernong; no date.[5]

She passed away in 1739.

Spruill-327 and Spruill-57 appear to represent the same person because: References in historical documents to "Henrietta Spruill" represent a transcription error. "Henrietta" is the same person as Anna Margeritta/Anaritta Spruill.
