Biography

Information from Carolina Dagevos.

Cornelia Erna Spruit was born in 1915. Daughter of Cornelis Spruit and Moestianah. Sister of Hendrik Spruit.

She married my grandfather on 19 July 1934 in Blitar where my father was born.

She divorced in Soerabaja, Indonesia on 2 August 1947. Together with her first husband, Eduard Dagevos, my grandfather they got 4 children Melania, Richard, Eduard and Lewis. Remarried in 1947 with Raden Djaruman with whom she had 2 children, Haryono Djaruman and Sachruliman Djaruman.

I am writing a book about my grandmother as it is quite an intriguing story. Married to my grandfather who was a prisoner of war by the Japanese and had to work on the Burma railway line, a Japanese colonel fell in love with my grandmother and told my grandmother her husband had passed away. With the hope that my grandmother would choose for him. She escaped with her children from the camp.

After the second World War my grandmother met her second husband Raden Djaruman whom she married and had a son from. It was then when my grandfather returned from the war to find out that my grandmother remarried and had a child.

My grandfather once told my father that the memory of his wife and children had kept him alive during his time in the camp and work on the deadly railway line, the Burma railway line.

They divorced in 1947. In 1949 my grandmother gave birth to another son.

My father and brothers were unable to find my grandmother for more than 40 years. I managed to find her sons from her second marriage eventually. Unfortunately after my grandmother passed away. In 1996.

My father Richard, son of Corrie told me how brave his mother was. When they were in the camp during the Second World War she managed to escape with her four children. They slept under trains to hide. They tried to get help from the Indonesian people but they handed them over to the Japanese.

My father adored his mother. No other man except his father was allowed to get close to her. He only allowed “oom Chris”, brother of his father to dance with her on the warm evenings on Java, East Indies.

He told me she was a very beautiful woman.

I, Carolina Erna Dagevos Millin am proud that I carry my grandmother’s second name Erna.
