Biography

Mary A. (Ann?) Spurgeon was born on 18 April 1828 in Holmes County, Ohio, USA. Her parents were James Spurgeon, b: 1791 in Virginia, and his wife, Susannah (Shrimplin) Spurgeon, b: 1799 in Maryland. The couple had married on 10 July 1817 in Coshocton County, Ohio. Coshocton County adjoins Killbuck Twp., Holmes County to the south. Mary was their 2nd child and 1st daughter. On the 1850 US Census, James & Susan Spurgeon's household was recorded living in Killbuck Township, Holmes, Ohio, USA:[1]

A few years before the 1850 US Census, Mary A. Spurgeon had left her parents' home to marry William Snow, b: 1822 in Holmes County, Ohio. The couple married at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Holmes County on 28 December 1845. Mary was 18 and William was 23 years old.[2]

On the 1850 US Census, William Snow's household was recorded in Richland Township, Holmes County, Ohio, USA:[3]

In June 1850, according to the US Census, William and Mary A. Snow were living between his father's farm and two of his brothers' farms, all in Richland Twp., Holmes County, Ohio. The Census confirms that his father, Simeon Snow, was born in 1795/96 in Connecticut and his mother, Catherine Snow, in 1795 in Pennsylvania. William had brothers named John, Simeon Jr., Asberry, James and Alexander Snow, all born in Ohio. A "Peter Snow," b: 1810 in Germany, was also living with Simeon Sr. and Catherine Snow. An older brother, age 29, was also a neighbor with wife Matilda & children: Sarah & Simeon, but his given name is illegible - ink blot (starts with "A" or "S").[4]

On the 1860 US Census, William and Mary (Spurgeon) Snow's household was still living in Richland Township, Holmes County, Ohio: [5]

William and Mary A. Snow were still recorded as living next door to William's younger brother, Simeon Snow Jr., married, age 35, and a Stone Mason. Their father, Simeon Snow Sr., age 64, b: Connecticut, a Farmer, and wife Catherine Snow, 64, b: Pennsylvania, lived next-door to Simeon Snow Jr.. William's other 4 brothers: Asberry, James M., John and Alexander Snow, were all still living nearby in Richland Township. James M. and Asberry Snow were not yet married and lived with their parents, helping farm their family farm.

William Snow served in Co. B, 186th Regiment, Ohio Union Army Infantry, during the US Civil War. Later, his widow, Mary Snow, received a small US government pension for his service.[6]

On the June 1870 US Census, William & Mary A. Snow's Household was still living in Richland Twp., Holmes County, Ohio: [7]

This Census showed that William's mother, Catherine Snow, had passed away (March 1860) but his father, Simeon Snow Sr., age 77, was still living on his nearby farm, valued at $6,000 dollars. His sons Asberry, 42, married with 4 children, and James M., 30, still single, were farming with him. William's younger brother, John Snow, now went by his middle name: "Wesley" (aka "John Wesley Snow," named for the founder of the Methodist faith). He was now 34, married with 4 children, farming the land where Simeon Jr. had been in 1860. Simeon Snow Jr., was recorded in Knox Township, Holmes, Ohio, with his family. Mary (Spurgeon) Snow's brother, James "Spurgen" (sic), was recorded as 40 years old, living a few farms away in Richland Township. His occupation was "Carpenter". Their father had passed away on 20 June 1850 in Killbuck Twp.. Their mother lived until 13 July 1882, passing away in Killbuck Twp., Holmes Co., Ohio.

William Snow died on 31 January 1874 in Killbuck, Holmes County, Ohio, USA. He was 52 years old and may have been killed in a work-related accident as the family seemingly continued to live in neighboring Richland Township. He was buried at Wolf Creek Cemetery, Killbuck Township., Holmes County, Ohio, USA.[8]

William's wife, Mary (Spurgeon) Snow, survived her husband's passing. On the June 1880 US Census, she was recorded as a 55-year-old widow, Head of Household, living in Richland Township, Holmes County, Ohio, with her 2 youngest daughters: Ada C. Snow, age 17; and Ida Snow, 10 years old. [9] The 1890 Census records were accidentally destroyed. On the June 1900 US Census, Mary A. Snow, was reported living as 75-year-old widow, with her youngest daughter, 30-years-old: Ida J. (Snow) Speck, in Richland Township, North Precinct, Glenmont village, Holmes County, Ohio, USA. Ida's husband, Willis Speck, age 38, was a Blacksmith; they had been married since 1891 but had no children as of June 1900. The Census also stated Mary A. Snow had had 8 children but that only 5 were still living in June 1900. [10] Mary A. (Spurgeon) Snow passed away in Richland Township, Holmes, Ohio, on 1 September 1905 at 77 years old. She was buried next to her deceased husband, William Snow, at the Wolf Creek Cemetery, Holmes County, Ohio, USA. [11]
