Biography

At the time of the 1850 census Alexander Spurloch (28) and Mary Spurloch (24) were living with their 3 children John (4), Thomas (2), and Andrew (1), in Cabell County Virginia. Harrison Spurloch (21) lived with them. Alexander's occupation was listed as farmer. Being age 28 in 1850 would make his birth year about 1822. ^[1]

An Alexander Spurlock, husband of Mary, died at the age of 32, on 4 Apr 1857 in Cabell Co., W. Va. Occupation: Blacksmith. This would make his birth year 1824-1825. ^[2] A gravestone for Alexander Spurlock shows Birth Sep. 17, 1824 and Death Apr. 12, 1857.^[3]

After Alexander's death, Mary continued to have children and give them the last name Spurlock. She is never listed with a new husband in the Census. Some family members think that her next door neighbor James Byers was the father of her children born after 1857; he died in the Civil War in 1863/4 and she stopped having children around then.^[4]

In the 1860 Census, Mary Spurlock (33), is living in Cabell County VA with the following children: John (13), Thomas (12), Andrew (11), Edney (9), Malinda (8), Mary (6), Leander (4), Joseph (3), and James (1). ^[5]

In the 1870 Census, Mary Spurlock (43) is living in the household of Thomas Spurlock (22) and his wife Ann (20) in Duval Township, Lincoln County WV, along with 3 more of her children, Joseph (13), James (10), and Albert (6). ^[6]

In the 1880 Census, Mary Spurlock (54 ), is widowed and living in Duval Township, Lincoln County WV with 4 of her children: Joseph (33), James (20), Albert (19), and Sidna (19), along with Elizabeth Harmon (70). ^[7]
