From Indiana Co., PA, Her People, Past and Present, Stewart, 1913, p 803: "The St. Clairs are of Scotch-Irish origin, a branch of the St. Clair family of Scotland, which was founded in the middle ages by Sir Walderne de St. Clair, a Norman knight". James St. Clair parents "were natives of the North of Ireland".

In the Revolutionary War, James served as private in Capt. Nathaniel Vansandt's company, Col. Robert Magaw's regiment, 5th battalion Pennsylvania troops.[2]

Stewart claims he was the cousin of General Arthur St Clair, but also says his parents were from Northern Ireland.[3] Arthur's uncles all seem to be from Scotland. Perhaps it was a more distant cousin, or just an apocryphal family story. An unsourced family tree[4] lists James's father as from Thurso, where Arthur was born.
