Ellen St. Cyr was a Native American and member of the Ho-Chunk tribe.
Ellen "... is the daughter of Hyacinth St Cyr a white man and Kee-nou-Kon a full blood Winnebago woman—That she resides at Prairie du Chlen [and] ls about 22 years old ..." (Waggoner, 36b) Since this affidavit was taken in 1838, this would mean that she was born in 1816. However, in a filing made in August 1839, "The said Ellen St. Cyr is 19 years old and lives with her father in Crawford County W. T. [Wisconsin Territory]." (Waggoner, 36a) That would make her birth year 1820. The first date is to be preferred since it was given by Ellen herself.
