Biography

Mahlon was born in Ballifield House, Falls of the Delaware, New Jersey, The birth date given in sources is Old Style date, 7th day, 2nd month, 1686. [1]

Given that his parents were members of the Society of Friends, Mahlon would have been a birthright Quaker.

He inherited the family home "Ballifield" and lived there for ten years following the death of his father. In 1714, shortly after his sister Ruth was married to her second husband in this house, Mahlon sold the house and much of his inherited land to a Philadelphia merchant, William Trent, who built a handsome brick house near Ballifield in 1719. Trent's house went by a number of names through the years, but most recently was restored and is called the "William Trent House." The village that grew up on the land that had been owned by the Stacy family was called "Trent's-town" and is now known as Trenton and is the capitol of New Jersey. [2]

In the year 1715, after selling off the inherited properties, Mahlon made a trip to England where he resided a "considerable time," according to the writings of a nephew, with his cousin Thomas Stacye "at his Seat of Ballifield" in Yorkshire. Returning to New Jersey, he settled in Bridgetown, which later became Mt. Holly. [3]

This Mahlon was the last of the Stacy surname in America, but out of respect, many families used both the names Mahlon and Stacy in the given names of their children. The surname continued in England for another 200 years, ending with the Rev. John Evelyn Stacye, Rector of the Parish church of Grenoside, near Sheffield, who died in 1905. [4]

Mahlon married Sarah Bainbridge. [5] A record was made of their intentions to marry on 1 March 1712 (May in the record, Old Style) [6]

Mahlon Stacy, Esq. died before 14 may 1742 in Northampton, Burlington County, New Jersey. In his will he mentions his three sisters Ruth Stacy Atkinson, Rebecca Stacy Wright and Mary Stacy Pownell. [7]
