Biography

Birth

Badsoldier was born about 1883.

Name

His Hocąk name is given as MaNaPaSheShickKah, which is for Mą̄ną̄pešīšíka, "Bad Soldier", which is from, mą̄ną̄́pe, "soldier, police"; šīšík, "to be bad; to be spoiled (of food)"; and -ka, a definite article suffix used in personal names. The Bear Clan was exclusively the mą̄ną̄́pera, conventionally translated as "soldiers" since they had special prerogatives on the warpath and otherwise perform the paramilitary duties of the police. Henry Stacy's name "Badsoldier" is simply a translation of his Bear Clan name.

Marriage and Children

On 5 April 1907, he married Mountain Wolf Woman Blowsnake (b. 1884). (1910 census, Vital Rec. Index) They had the following children together:

Name Birth Place Source
Philip 1907 Nebraska
Theodore January 1909 1910
Marie 17 September 1911 Nebraska
Mitchell Scotch 11 December 1912 Nebraska
John C. 14 June 1913
Rebecca 16 April 1915 Nebraska 1940
Viola 26 March 1920
Stella Marie 3 January 1923
Dolly 1925 1940
Martin 26 July 1926
Eva 10 December 1928 1933

Philip and John C. Stacy both died in infancy. Theodore was mentioned in the 1910 Indian census, but not in the Federal census, and probably died in 1910. The 1940 census notes that Rebecca was born in Flambeau, Nebraska. That census includes a daughter Dolly not mentioned in other censuses. In 1940 they also had their 5 year old niece Maureen Stacy living with them.

Death

He passed away on 25 May 1936. (Vital Recs.)
