Samuel Stafford, second son of Thomas and Elizabeth Stafford, born 1636, lived in Warwick and died aged 83 March 20, 1717/8 Warwick, Rhode Island. [1]
He served as deputy to the General Assembly in 1670-72-74-79-82-86-90 and 1705, and in 1674-86 was elected assistant but refused to serve. On February 24, 1671, he and his wife sold to Richard Carder land for twenty pounds, and on September 1, 1700, he gave six shillings toward building the Friends' meeting-house at Mashapaug. He was overseer of the poor in 1687. His will was dated March 16, 1711, and proved April 16, 1718, his son Thomas being executor. He bequeathed to his son, Amos, to daughters, Sarah Scranton, Patience Howland, Freelove Tillinghast and Elizabeth Devotion, to granddaughters, Mary Thurber and Mary Stafford, and to son, Thomas.
Samuel married Mercy, daughter of Stukeley Westcott, who died March 25, 1700. Children, born in Warwick:

Samuel Stafford's will was dated 16 Mar 1711 and proved 16 April 1718 at Warwick, RI[9] and is abstracted: "To eldest son, Amos, all right in land south side of Potawonut River in Kings Town. To eldest daughter, Sarah Scranton, 40 shillings and any debts due her, and like legacy to daughters Patricia Howland, Freelove Tillinghast, and Elizabeth Devotion. To granddaughters Mary Thurber and Mary Stafford Smith, 20 shillings. To youngest son Thomas all lands in purchase of Potawomut, Warwick and all moveable estate, he paying legacies and debts. Inventory: 101 pounds, 6d, v 12. warn? aporill (sic) (19 pounds), Mony (sic) 3 pounds, 16 shillings, cane (14s), pewter and brass, iron pots (4 pounds 9d) looking glass, wheel and other wooden ware (11 d), four stools, eight chairs, two tables (2 pounds 10 d) , one bed and bedding (12 pounds) three bedsteads (1 pound 4 d), one cupard (sic) and three chests (3 pounds), several carts of green (sic) ware (13 pounds) nine head of cattle (26 pounds), four horse kind (14 pounds), etc. The document was registered as witnessed by Richard Greene, Aff'd and town council clerk John Wicks. Wit Peter Greene, John Waterman, Richard Greene. Memo re granddaughter Mary Smith to have 20 shillings. RI wills. Probate dated 16 April 1718 states death as 20 March, Capt John Waterman and Capt Peter Greene stated they saw Samuel Stafford sign his will as thye were present to town council meeting 16 April 1718. Geo Westcoate and Anthony Low appears before council to attest to the inventory of Mr Samuel Stafford and Mr Thomas Stafford appeared to give oath that the inventory contained all moveable goods, recorded by town clerk John Wicks 20 May 1718. His date of death, 20 March 1717/18 is recorded in the heading of his inventory which was taken on 16 April 1718.[9]
