Per Henry and Julia's great grandaughter
They left the town of Louisa, Kentucky in 1864 by tug boat on the Big Sandy River to Catlettsburg, where they got on a steamboat on the Ohio River. They went on the Ohio River to Cairo, Illinois where the Ohio empties into the Mississippi, then up the Mississippi River to St. Louis, Missouri, where the Missouri meets. They took the Missouri River west to Westport Landing at the Kansas border. It was a very long, tedious and somewhat crowded trip all the way. At Lee's Summit, Missouri, near the Kansas border, they rented a place and planted a grain crop with which to have something to continue on into Kansas(1870).
In 1867 a severe smallpox epidemic in the area caused many settlers to go elsewhere, leaving Belmont nearly deserted. The Belmont post office stayed open for ten more years but was finally ceased in 1877 . (Kansas Forts, Old West Kansas (KS): Fort Leavenworth, Ft. Hays, Riley, Larned, Dodge, Scott: Western Frontier Fort History )
Two sons, Henry Jefferson and Stephen got smallpox, Stephen died, Henry Jefferson called "Jeff' had a fever as a young child which caused brain damage never married no children caused by small pox during a small pox epidemic

Stafford Goodwin and Henry Harrison Goodwin came up the Ohio River to the Mississippi River to the Missouri River and landed in Westport Landing ( later known as Kansas City, Missouri) and settled there.
