Biography

Eliza Ann Stallings was born February 18, 1838, and died February 1, 1871. She married James Washington Simmons, were married in Pike County, Mississippi. Eliza was'the daughter of James Stallings (born May 21, 1814, and died at his son's home, W. W. Stallings, in Pike County on June 23,'1892). Eliza's mother was Sarah Pearson (Pierson) Stallings (born Jul y 21, 1813 and died November 5, 1878). Eliza had ten sisters and brothers, one of whom was Jane Stallings, who married Jim's Brother, Calvin Simmons. Jim and Eliza are buried in the Stallings Cemetery near her father's old home place.[1]


  1. James Silas Simmons,'son of Jim and Eliza Simmons, was born in Pike County, Mississippi, in 1856, and died at Kentwood, Louisiana in 1932. He married (1) Tempie Parson. She is buried at Amite River Church. (The I860 census for Washington Parish, Louisiana gives "John H. C." as the first child of Jim and Eliza, but the Stallings Family Bible gives the first child as James Silas.)
  2. Harvey Richard (Harve) Simmons, son of James Washington and Eliza, was born September 6, 1867 and died June 25, 1931, according to both Family Bible and grave marker records. He married Mary Jane Dillon, who was born December 19, 1854 and died February 3, 1942. Mary Jane was a sister to Hester Dillon who married Harvey's brother, James E. Simmons (known as "Red Jim"). Harvey and Mary Jane are buried in the Burkhalter Cemetery, near Walker's Bridge in Pike County. They lived for many years on the site of the old Black Bill Simmons residence. They were the parents of ten children.
  3. William Pearson (Buck) Simmons, son of- James Washington, and Eliza Simmons was born in Mississippi, December 19, 1859, and died November 18, 1939, according to the Stallings Family Bible. He married Idella Dillon (spelled Idellar Dillon-in the Stallings Bible). Idella was born July 21, 1865, and died January 8, 1940. The marker at Idella's grave records her as born in 1868 and died in 1941. This is in error and so is the one at Buck's grave, which has the dates 1860-1939. They are buried in the Baughman Family Cemetery; west of Bogalusa, Louisiana. They lived in Kentwood and in Bogalusa, Louisiana. Idella was the daughter of John Dillon" and Margaret Ophelia Knighton Dillon. Buck and Delia, as she was called, had seven children.
  4. Margaret Ophelia (Sis) Simmons, daughter of James Washington and Eliza Simmons, married Joe D_____________ Deer. The 1870 census list s Margaret as 10 years old, and family records give her birthdate as April 1, 1862. A member of the family said that she was born about 18$2 and died about 1934 at the age of 72 years, Joe Deer was born December 25, 1851, and died January 23, 1918; They are buried at the Centerville Baptist Church in Walthall County, Mississippi, Margaret and Joe had nine children.
  5. Sarah W. (Sally) Simmons, daughter of James Washington Simmons and Eliza Simmons was listed in the 1870 census as 7 years old. She was born March 24, 1865, according to the Family Bible. She married Jesse S. (J.E. Alford, born December 29, 1855, and died September 15, 1909. Sally died They are buried near where Mr. and Mrs. Batey Anglin now live. Sally and Jesse lived east of Mt. Herman, Louisiana in what is known as "Alford Town". Jesse was the son of Johnnie Alford. Sally and Jesse had eleven children.
  6. James E. (Red Jim) Simmons, son of James William Simmons and Eliza Stallings Simmons, was born February 17, 1866, and died in 1950, according to the Stallings Family Bible. The grave marker gives the dates as 1866-1950. The 1870 census records James E. as 5 years old. He married Rettie Burkhalter, born in May 1864 and died in August 1899, according to the grave marker. She is buried in the Burkhalter Family Cemetery near Walker's Bridge. Jim and Rettie had six children.
  7. Willie Murray Simmons, son of-James and Eliza Simmons was born June 17, 1867, and died March 18, 1926, according to the Stallings Family Bible and also according to the grave marker. He is buried at Kentwood,-Louisiana. He married Maggie Allen, born May 6, I867 and died January 5, 1954, at the age of 87 years. They had no children. Maggie Allen was the sister to Milche Hasseltine Allen, who married Jasper Batey Anglin, the father, and mother of David Bunion Anglin, who married Eva Ophelia Simmons.[2]
