Biography

Some of the interwoven family relationships per correspondence with cousin Judy Milum, July 2014:

William Eli Curnett (1854, AR---1920, TX) married Mary A. (Angeline, Adaline, or Ann) Standlee, daughter of Joe Broady Standlee and first wife Rachel Crabaugh.  This Mary A. Standlee was born abt. 1851.  William Eli Curnett's father was David M. Curnutt (1830-1870).  David Curnutt (Curnett) was a brother to Comfort Curnutt (1826-1913), who was first married to Ranson Patty and then to Levi Standlee (son of David Standlee and Catherine "Kate" Boren Standlee).  Comfort and David were children of a John Curnutt and wife Axey (maiden name unknown).  Mary (maiden name unknown*) Curnutt (1836-1924), widow of David Curnett and mother of William Eli Curnett, became the third wife of Joe Broady Standlee.  This Mary was born abt. 1836 and died in 1924.

Joe Broady (Brodey?) Standlee was a son of Abraham Standlee and first wife Susan Delano. (2016 insert: Abrahm was son of Onicypheros Standlee.)

The spellings Curnutt and Curnett were both used in this family which intermarried with Standlees. Thought I'd give this tangle a second try at wording or explanation!----Judy

  • 2016 update, Social Security Application for son Eli showed father as Joseph S Standler (should be Standlee) and mother as Mary Brown.

Note: Source: George Glenn Crabaugh-Information gleaned from Vol. XXXI Spring, 1985 No. 1 issue of Carroll County Quarterly-page 1 "Susannah Standlee and her song".

"The 6th. child of Abraham and Susanah Standlee was James Samuel Standlee, who was born during 1836, and was united in marriage with Elizabeth Jane Scott in 1856--Elizabeth Jane Scott was the daughter of John Scott, the man for whom Scott's Prairie (Today's Green Forest) was named. James Samuel Standlee enlisted in Company G, of the 1st. Arkansas Calvary, of the Union Army, in July of 1862. He was wounded in the hip during a skirmish on Yocum Creek, in Carroll County, on 15 Nov, 1862. He was discharged at Fayetteville, Arkansas, during November of 1865. During the Civil War his family had moved to Springfield, Missouri for their own safety, but they returned to Carroll county in 1870. James Samuel Standlee still carried the rifle ball in his hip that he received on Yocum Creek and he died of lead poisoning on January 26, 1874, on his farm north of Berryville. Jane (Scott) Standlee joined her husband in death on September 30, 1901, and they are both interred in the historic Blackjack Cemetery. They are the parents of seven children: Mary Rachel Standlee; John Isaac Standlee; Rebecca Elizabeth Ann Standlee; James Samuel Standlee Jr.; Susan Mahala Standlee; and unnamed infant daughter who was born and died during infancy; and Hannah Martha Standlee.

1860 Federal Census: James and his family were living with his parents, Abraham Standlee and his family at this time.
