Family:
Thomas married Elizabeth and they had the following children:[1]
Land sale in 1768: Thomas Stanfield and his wife Elizabeth sold 100 acres to Thomas Banks. It was near Jeremiahs Fork in Halifax County and adjacent to other land that Thomas owned. The price was 10 pounds.[2]
1774: A Thomas Stanfield bought 305 acres for 280 pounds on Lawsons Creek, Halifax County. William Stanfield had bought land along the same creek in the previous year. The sellers were Henry and John Chambers. A year later, a Thomas Stanfield sold 378 acres near Jeremiah’s Fork to Reuben Pickett for 130 pounds.[3]
In Halifax militia, 1777: In August 1777 the County Court recommended to the governor of Virginia the men who should be officers in a militia for Halifax County. It had many companies. Thomas Stanfield was proposed as a second lieutenant for a company commanded by Captain Marmaduke Stanfield. [4] Thomas was buried in a Stanfield family cemetery as "Lt. Thomas Stanfield", a Revolutionary War veteran.[5]
1779: During wartime Thomas Stanfield bought 400 acres in Halifax County on both sides of Evans Creek. It was next to land that Thomas already owned and land owned by Robert Stanfield. The price was 300 pounds.[6]
1787, taxable property: Thomas was one of six Stanfields in Halifax County with taxable property. He was assessed as having a household with one white male between 16 and 21, four black people over 16, five blacks under 16, six horses and mules, and 20 cattle. The other five Stanfields were Ephraim, John, Marmaduke, and two Roberts. Comment: John and one of the Roberts were assessed with just one horse or mule, so were probably in a younger generation.[7]
Death: Thomas had a will that was dated 19 December 1796 and proved in Halifax County Court on 23 January 1797, so he died in Halifax County between those dates.[8] Thomas was buried in a Stanfield family cemetery between Turbeville and Alton.[5]
Children in will: Thomas' will did not name a wife. The sons named were William, Benjamin, and Thomas. William and Benjamin were executors. He named seven daughters: Fanny Wy___, Milley Holt, Jeany Holt, Molly Warren, Betty Caldwell, Salley, and Dolly. A Robert Stanfield witnessed the will.[8]
