Biography

William Stanhope PC was a member of aristocracy in England.

William Stanhope, 1st Earl of Harrington.

He was the son of John Stanhope and Dorothy Agard.

He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England. He was admitted to the Inner Temple in 1704 entitled to practice as a barrister.

He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Derby between 1715 and 1722. He was Envoy to Madrid from 1717 to 1718. He was Envoy to Turin between 1718 and 1720. He was Envoy to Madrid in 1720. He held the office of Ambassador to Spain between 1721 and 1727. He held the office of Ambassador to the Congress of Aix-la-Chapelle in 1727. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1727. He held the office of Vice-Chamberlain between 1727 and 1730. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Derby between 1727 and 1730. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Steyning between April 1727 and July 1727. He held the office of Ambassador to Spain from 1729 to 1730. He held the office of Secretary of State, North Department from 1730 to February 1741/42.

He was created 1st Baron Harrington, co. Northampton [Great Britain] on 6 January 1729/30. He held the office of Lord President of the Council from February 1741/42 to January 1744/45.

He was created 1st Earl of Harrington, co. Northampton [Great Britain] on 9 February 1741/42. He was created 1st Viscount Petersham of Petersham, co. Surrey [Great Britain] on 9 February 1741/42.

He held the office of Secretary of State, North Department between 1744 and 1746. He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland between 1746 and 1750. He gained the rank of General of Foot in 1747.

Marriage and family

He married Anne Griffith, daughter of Colonel Edward Griffith and Elizabeth Lawrence.
